In the contemporary world, marked by instability and fragmentation, urban public spaces emerge as social products, terrains where power relations and claims to the right to the city are constantly enacted (Lefebvre, 1968). Within this framework, creative placemaking is a systemic and interdisciplinary process, established in urban studies and social sciences, that defines the participatory physical and symbolic re-imaginations and transformations of spaces through art and creativity (Markusen & Gadwa, 2010). Through a scoping review of 35 articles, the paper explores how these practices mobilize critical reflection and collective action to reshape social imaginaries towards new forms of living. The results suggest that placemaking should be regarded not only as a design-oriented process, but as a deeply pedagogical and political act: by opening fields of experience, it fosters reflexivity, imaginative vision (Dewey, 1934) and civic responsibility towards more just and democratic cities.
